The Public Safety department seeks to prevent crime, violence, and fires by educating and building relationships with our community.
Community Programs:
- K-5 Programs include “Officer Friendly,” an opportunity for our officers to visit classrooms, using videos, coloring books and other teaching tools to help acquaint young people with law enforcement officials.
- Middle School through High School. As members of the Police Athletic League (PAL) (http://www.nationalpal.org ) we use their resources to connect youth to mentoring and youth leadership programs.
- Senior Neighbor includes programs to address the unique needs of our senior citizens and to ensure that they are not alone as they face the challenges of advanced age.
- National Night Out (https://natw.org/about). Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out is a time when our police officers help build a sense of community and camaraderie on a local level. We join thousands of communities across the nation in hosting special events designed to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places for everyone.
Tip411 Mobile App
The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety is increasing its crime-fighting arsenal with an innovative new phone app to help residents better connect with the department in order to share information, view alerts, and submit anonymous tips, all from the convenience of their smartphone.
The app is called Benton Harbor DPS, developed by Citizen Observer, and is available for download for free via the Google Play Store or the iTunes App Store.
Citizens should be aware that this service is for activity within the city of Benton Harbor only. Any tips sent must involve information within the City, not to be confused with Benton Township. However, all local citizens are encouraged to get the app.
